PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. - Longtime New York sports broadcaster
Jim Gordon has died after a long illness. He was 76.Gordon
died Feb. 17, a spokesman for the NHL said.
Gordon began his announcing career in Syracuse, N.Y.,
where he did pro basketball and broadcast the first hockey
game he ever saw. He came to New York in 1954, filling in for
Marty Glickman on basketball and working on Brooklyn Dodgers
pregame and postgame shows.
In 1955, Gordon started working for Madison Square Garden,
broadcasting hockey, college and pro basketball, boxing and
dog shows. He did CBS Network hockey from 1967-69 and worked
with Hall of Fame referee Bill Chadwick on Rangers telecasts
from 1973-81.
Gordon also worked as news director at New York radio
stations WINS and WNEW and was the radio play-by-play voice
of the NFL Giants from 1977-94.
After his retirement from broadcasting, Gordon became
involved in Putnam County political and community affairs. He
was a member of the Putnam Valley zoning board of appeals,
the library board, and a volunteer firefighter. He also
served on the county legislature from 1988 to 1996.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Jeanne, three sons and two
daughters. His wake will be held Feb. 21 at Heritage Funeral
Home in Putnam Valley. A public memorial service is being
planned.
