  • Alan Walden Wins Helen Thomas Award - March 2005

  • Alan Walden is a broadcast journalist with almost half a century of experience in local and network radio and television.

Born in New York City in 1936, Walden was, at various times, news director of radio stations in Cleveland, New York, and Boston, vice president of news for Metromedia Radio, executive producer and chief correspondent for the NBC News and Information Service, and Director of Network News and senior correspondent for NBC Radio.

Walden joined WBAL in Baltimore in July of 1988 as morning news anchor and principal anchor of special events. His daily commentary, "Walden Ponderings," made its debut a month later and still heard on WBAL in the news at 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Although he retired from the morning news in 1998, Walden continues to appear regularly on WBAL during major news events and is a permanent guest on the Chip Franklin Show each Friday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 12 Noon.

Walden has won virtually every major award for broadcast excellence during his long and distinguished career. He has also been honored with the Patrick Henry Award of the National Guard Association of the United States, the Meritorious Service Medal of the Maryland National Guard, and the Public Service Award of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Walden is the author of two books: "Walden Ponderings-What's Right, What's Wrong, What Matters," published in 1995 and "Isthmus," a novel based on his experiences in Latin America, published as a talking book in 2002.

In addition to his broadcasting activities, Walden serves as Chairman of the Patriots of Fort McHenry, the volunteer organization that supports the National Park Service at the nation's only officially designated historic shrine. He is Chairman of the Baltimore Council of the Navy League of the United States, Co-Chairman of the Baltimore Maritime Museum, and serves on the boards of the Living Classrooms Foundation, the B & O Museum, the Baltimore Advertising and Professional Club, and the National Flag Day Foundation.

A much sought after banquet speaker and master of ceremonies Walden is also a historian. He and his wife, the former Jean Houston, are the principal lecturers on Clipper Cruise Line's annual Civil War voyage along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Walden has also been featured on dozens of Clipper cruises on the Hudson River in New York and he and "Miss Jeannie" have lectured on the military, political, and social history of Latin America on the vessels of Holland-America.
